Well I gotta say it....I LOVE WOLF CREEK!!!!! That place is just AWSOME! Never let's me down! Only down side to the trip was the ticket on the way up, and losing 2 discs in thigh deep snow on the disc golf course. Other than that it was almost perfect(only thing that I could say was wrong was I was missing 2 of my boarding buddies Brandn and Patty)
When we got to the mountain Sunday morning (our first day to ride) it started snowing...like right as we got out of the car to suit up. AND IT DIDN'T STOP all day!!! We ended up getting 14". Not quite white out conditions, but pretty close...just how I like it...BIG DUMPS!! So Ashley stops after lunch and I'm on my own. Ended up being on my own for most of the rest of the trip as Ashley didn't board again and Coby did the family only skiing. Actually didn't board/ski with anyone I knew the 2nd day at all! But I did run some AWSOME stuff...even found some new stuff I hadn't ridden before like Blue Berry Hill(which was probably my favorite run of the trip), then another black solar slide...then I found the rock garden which was super steep, but a great run other than the one rock I hit. Found a few new tree areas that were not really named runs but were really fun!
Zoey did 2 days of class, then we got the OK to take her up the mountain on the last day. Ran 1 green with her and she said she wanted to go faster. So we took her up again and went down her 1st BLUE! Jeanne was freaking out, because I just turned down it and Zoey followed. She made it down perfect and said it was awsome...and wanted more! Can't wait for a couple more years when she can do the trees with me!
Calen picked up skiing VERY WELL...so good that on the 3rd day I went with her a little and took her through some slower tree runs, then some medium trees...then down her 1st black. She did great, and I see her being my ski buddy very soon! Everytime I'd ask her if she was ok, and if it was to much she said "NO I CAN DO A LITTLE MORE!"
Disc golf was a bust...Ashley and myself went and gave it a go. Played 10 holes and finally called it quits. On some of the holes we were walking through thigh deep snow...finally after losing my second disc we decided to call it and go to the brewery! He ended up not wanting to wait so he and Brandy went somewhere else while we drank and ate pizza before the hot springs.
Both the 2nd and 3rd days were blue bird POW days. And the conditions..almost as always at Wolf Creek were PERFECT! Can't wait to go back at Christmas time and do it all over again!!!
Now that the 2012 Feb. trip is over...it's time to start thinking about where the 2013 trip will be? Thinking maybe Utah?
Legs did better than I thought! Don't get me wrong they were SCREAMIN' at the end of each day...and crying when putting the boots on the next morning(or going up the stairs to the house), but I closed the lifts down both the 1st and 3rd day. Blew down a black tree run with only 1 break(had 10 minutes to to shut down time) on the 3rd day to catch the lift one more time. Tried to get down again, but just couldn't get there in time. Would have closed them down on 2nd day, but I boarded through lunch since I was on my own the entire day and left early to go play DG...should have just stayed on the mountain and saved the 2 discs! Remember that basket in Tahoe? Well several were like that, but it wasn't packed snow...it was all powder! Promise you I was to my upper thighs in some spots walking from teebox to my disc!!!
Coby found out snowboarders can be fast!!!! You should also ask him about "not falling"!?!?! (have to say I feel twice...both on easy runs after running extreme stuff, felt pretty dumb both times)
And I think Ashley found out he was in worse shape than you!!
Well Frechie, his brother Shawn, and another guy played in a 3 man team event this last weekend up in STL. under the Warlock name...ended up taking 2nd in their division. The STL Chapter is spreading the word of the Warlock!
Since the tournament season is in full swing,I have a random question that I would like to get everyones opinion on. Bieng an occasional TD, I have noticed that there are two ways to approach a tournament..
Give small player packs and, in return, have larger payouts..
or
Give large player packs and less payout?
In my experiences, I have noticed that the average player prefers the larger player pack and the more pro player prefers the larger payout, which should be expected. But who should the Director cater to?
Of course it all depends on the type of tourney it is....but I think some where in the middle is the best way to go with this issue.
Like the Menage A Trois...I love the way it's done. Bigger player pack with trophies and medals to the winners as payout.
But like with the Crush we really don't do big player packs, but the LARGE stacks of disc at the end are great to see...especially if you finished in the payout!
Big Spring has bigger player packs than the Crush...but at the end of tourney the stacks don't seem as large as some tourneys, but the payout is still good payout because they get added cash for both pros and ams.
All good in their own way.
Then Abilene did HUGE player packs one year, but did no payout to Ams at the end. I've played one other tourney that was this was also and really didn't like it because the ones that shot well through the weekend (but didn't finish in the trophy positions) weren't rewarded for playing well any more than the guys that finished DFL. I also know Micah and Kirk have played 2 majors fairly recently that did things this way, with out them knowing it before. They felt jipped at the end cause their was no reward for finishing at the top.
So once again I'd say some where in the middle, to me, is best. That way everyone gets something, but the ones that shot well get rewarded in the end. The main thing, especially if you are going large player pack and low payout, is make it well known before hand. That way people know what to expect.
Being a TD as well it never fails there is always at least one person that comes and says I thought I was suppose to get a disc in my players pack and even has stated they read that somewhere even though they really didn't. I have as well played Abilene one year where you got a disc in your player pack but in return there was no payout but in Big Spring and Levelland both where you got a disc in your players pack but there was still huge payout. I think Big Spring and Levelland are able to pull this off because they get a lot of support and money from their city. Sure it is great to get a disc in your players pack, but you still will have people complaining even about that because it is a disc they don't throw or something. Myself, I feel there should always be payout over big players packs in a sanctioned tournament unless you have enough money from sponsors to be able to do both. For smaller events that are more for the fun and love of the game then I think the TD should do what they feel is best and when players complain about what they did or didn't get just smile and tell them you are sorry they feel that way and to have a nice day. That is my two cents.
A guy goes into a bar, there's a robot bartender. The robot says, "What will you have?" The guy says, "Martini." The robot brings back the best martini ever and says to the man, "What's your IQ?" The guy says, "168." The robot then proceeds to talk about physics' space exploration and medical technology.
The guy leaves, but he is curious... So he goes back into the bar. The robot bartender says, "What will you have?" The guy says, "Martini." Again, the robot makes a great martini gives it to the man and says, "What's your IQ?" The guy says, "100." The robot then starts to talk about Football, Budweiser and John Deere tractors.
The guy leaves, but finds it very interesting, so he thinks he will try it one more time. He goes back into the bar. The robot says, "What will you have?" The guy says, "Martini," and the robot brings him another great martini. The robot then says, "What's your IQ?" The guy says, "Uh, about 50." The robot leans in real close and says,
Awesome Joke! And JC do big payout. It sucks to be playing for nothing. It is a competition, I feel that if the winners get nothing there is no reason to come bk and play it again in the future. The Best tournaments that I have been to have been ones like DD Towne Lake where there was a players pack and decent payout. DD does not pay the rec division because of sandbagging purposes. And They do not give players packs to pro.
Man I am worn out today...It was a great weekend of Disc Golf, but man monday is going t suck!!!
Had an AWSOME time at the Petty Games yesterday!! My ears are still ringing though after Petty's "cannon".
Congrats to the 1st Annual Petty games over all winners, Sean and Patty! They took 1st in disc golf by 4 stokes and the over all by 1 point...with Ashley and myself taking 1st in the shooting comp. part.
Can't wait to add some games next year to the challenge. I think open site rifle shots and maybe bocci ball would round ou the comp. nicely!
Watched it on youtube and you can't really see the disc flying. The reviews on the site were mostly negative saying it was too windy and he was throwing a lite weight discs, but 836' is pretty amazing!
Well I'm pretty sure I've seen you throw one waaaay further than that in Crested Butte Patty. I couldn't see the disc any more....and I WAS THERE IN PERSON! Of course there might have been some elevation involved.
The kid has set records in almost every age procted division he can so far...I'm sure he'll extend this out once he gets a little stronger.
